  2. Mix dates, soda, and hot water. Let stand.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix egg, sugar, butter, flour, baking powder, and nuts. Stir into the date mixture.
  4. Blend well and pour into the prepared pan. Bake for 35 minutes.
  5. Cook topping ingredients until smooth and thick. Spread over hot or cooled cake.
