  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x9x1 1/2-inch pan.
  2. Mix flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and cocoa. Stir in milk, shortening, and nuts. Spread batter in the pan.
  3. Combine brown sugar and cocoa; sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water over the entire mixture.
  4. Bake for 45 minutes. During baking, the cake will rise to the top and the fudge sauce will settle at the bottom. Serve warm.
