GERMAN SWEET CHOCOLATE CAKE

  1. Melt chocolate in 1/2 cup boiling water and cool.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition.
  4. Add vanilla and melted chocolate; mix until blended.
  5. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt.
  6. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with buttermilk to the chocolate mixture, beating until smooth.
  7. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  8. Pour batter into 3 (8 or 9-inch) layer pans lined on the bottoms with paper.
  9. Bake at 350 degrees for 30–40 minutes.
  10. Cool and frost with Coconut-Pecan Frosting.
