  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Cream together shortening and sugar. Add melted chocolate and beaten egg yolks.
  3. Sift together flour and salt. Add alternately with buttermilk to the creamed mixture.
  4. Add vanilla and baking soda. Fold in beaten egg whites.
  5. Pour batter into 3 greased and floured 8-inch cake pans.
  6. Bake for 20–25 minutes.
