APPLE STREUSEL

  1. Peel, core, and slice apples; combine with water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cook for 10 minutes.
  2. Add a mixture of cornstarch and water to thicken; cook for 5 more minutes.
  3. For the dough, cut shortening into flour, baking powder, and salt. Add egg yolks, water, and lemon juice; knead until mixed.
  4. Divide dough into 2 parts: one to fit the bottom of a 10 x 13-inch pan and the other to cover the filling.
  5. Spoon filling into the crust-lined pan and cover with the remaining dough, rolled to fit.
  6. Bake at 425 degrees for 20–30 minutes. Spread a lemon juice and powdered sugar glaze over the top immediately after baking.
