  1. Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
  2. Mix shortening, brown sugar, and egg until creamy.
  3. Stir in molasses, then add the flour mixture.
  4. Refrigerate for 1 hour.
  5. Shape dough into walnut-sized balls and place 3 inches apart on a baking sheet.
  6. Bake at 375 degrees for 12–15 minutes.
