  1. Cook sugar, water, and syrup to 256°F.
  2. Remove from heat and add 2 c. marshmallow cream without stirring. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Stir the mixture, then beat until it begins to thicken.
  4. Add flavoring and coloring, continuing to beat until the batch breaks short when the paddle is lifted.
  5. Add 1/3 c. vegetable shortening, then pour onto a slab sprinkled with powdered sugar.
  6. When cool enough to handle, form into balls or rolls.
