  1. Heat oil to 370°F for frying.
  2. Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. Beat sugar and eggs until light, then add melted shortening.
  4. Gradually add the flour mixture, alternating with milk.
  5. Turn dough onto a floured board and pat down lightly.
  6. Roll dough to ½-inch thickness and cut into doughnuts.
  7. Fry doughnuts in hot oil, turning until golden brown on both sides.
