  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease two 9-inch pans or a tube pan.
  2. Beat egg yolks with water until the mixture measures 1 quart.
  3. Add sugar and beat for 3 minutes.
  4. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the egg mixture.
  5. Beat egg whites with a pinch of cream of tartar until stiff peaks form. Fold into the batter.
  6. Pour into the greased pans and bake for 35 minutes.
