  1. Crumble the yeast into a cup, add a little lukewarm water and a teaspoon of sugar.
  2. Heat the milk and cool it to 80°F before mixing with yeast.
  3. Add sugar, beaten eggs, and salt.
  4. Sift flour once before measuring and then add all the flour at once, mixing thoroughly with your hands.
  5. Work in the softened shortening and then the yeast mixture.
  6. Let the dough rise until doubled in bulk, then knead slightly.
  7. Allow to rise again for an hour.
  8. Bake in a moderate oven until golden brown.
