  1. Preheat the oven to a moderate temperature.
  2. Dissolve the baking soda in the buttermilk.
  3. Cream the butter and brown sugar together.
  4. Beat in the eggs one at a time.
  5. Alternately add the buttermilk mixture and sifted cake flour to the creamed mixture.
  6. Stir in the chopped dates and nuts.
  7. Pour into a greased cake pan and bake for about 1 hour, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  8. Frosting Instructions:
  9. Boil the sugars and water until it reaches the thread stage.
  10. Gradually pour over the beaten egg whites, beating continuously until stiff peaks form.
  11. Spread on cooled cake.
