  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C).
  2. Cream the shortening, sugar, and eggs together until light and fluffy.
  3. Sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and spices.
  4. Mix the pumpkin with milk and baking soda.
  5. Alternately add dry and wet ingredients to the creamed mixture, starting and ending with dry.
  6. Stir in the chopped nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan or layer cake pans.
  8. Bake a loaf cake for 50 to 55 minutes, or layer cakes for 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
