  1. Preheat the oven and prepare a cake pan.
  2. Cream butter and 1/4 cup sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolks and beat well.
  3. Sift together flour and baking powder. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk. Mix in orange rind or vanilla.
  4. In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until stiff. Gradually add powdered sugar and continue beating until glossy and firm.
  5. Spread cake batter into the pan. Top with the meringue and sprinkle with nuts or coconut.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until set and golden, about 35 minutes.
