  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream the sugar and shortening together until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the well-beaten egg and mix thoroughly.
  4. Stir in the applesauce and hot water.
  5. Add the raisins and nuts.
  6. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice, and fold into the wet ingredients until well combined.
  7. Pour into a greased baking pan and bake for about 1 hour.
  8. Allow to cool slightly before frosting with caramel frosting.
