SPICE CAKE WITH TOASTED NUT ICING

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg yolks and beat well.
  3. Sift together flour, soda, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and sour milk to the creamed mixture. Mix in vanilla.
  5. Spread batter in a greased large baking tin.
  6. For the meringue, beat egg whites until very stiff. Gradually add sugar and continue beating until smooth. Spread over the batter and sprinkle with almonds.
  7. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours or until done.
