  1. Preheat oven to a low temperature (around 300°F or 150°C).
  2. Cream together sugar and shortening. Add eggs and yolk, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Sift together flour, soda, and spices.
  4. Alternately add dry ingredients and sour milk to the creamed mixture.
  5. Pour into a large loaf pan and bake slowly until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Once baked, cover with your choice of icing.
