FRUIT CAKE

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C). Grease two loaf pans.
  2. Cream butter and sugars together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Stir in sour milk mixed with baking soda.
  4. In a separate bowl, toss the raisins, currants, citron, figs, and nuts with some of the flour.
  5. Sift remaining flour with spices and gradually add to the creamed mixture.
  6. Fold in the fruit and nut mixture.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  8. Bake for about 1 1/2 hours, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow to cool before slicing.
