CRUMB CAKE

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a baking pan.
  2. Mix sugar, shortening, flour, salt, cinnamon, and cloves until crumbly. Reserve 1 cup of this mixture for the topping.
  3. Beat eggs and combine with sour milk and baking soda. Add to the remaining crumb mixture.
  4. Pour batter into the prepared pan. Sprinkle with the reserved crumbly mixture and optional chopped nuts.
  5. Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
