DARK DEVIL FOOD CAKE

  1. Bring 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup cocoa, and 1 cup hot water to a boil, then let cool.
  2. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease and flour a cake pan.
  3. Cream 1/2 cup shortening with 1 cup sugar.
  4. Add unbeaten eggs, beating well after each addition.
  5. Sift the flour and mix with the sour milk in which the baking soda has been dissolved.
  6. Fold in the cooled cocoa mixture.
  7. Stir in the vanilla.
  8. Bake for about 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
