TOASTED OATMEAL COOKIES

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. Toast oatmeal in the oven until lightly browned, then remove and let cool.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together shortening and sugar until smooth.
  4. Add beaten eggs and vanilla, mix well.
  5. Stir in sour milk and the toasted oatmeal.
  6. Sift together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and spices. Gradually add to the wet ingredients.
  7. Fold in dates and nuts.
  8. Drop by spoonful onto the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Bake at 400°F (200°C) for about 10-12 minutes or until cookies are golden brown.
